Prairie Salvage is one of South Bend Indiana's secret treasures. It is the major source in the area for discounted upholstery fabrics, drapery and vinyl goods, foam and various upholstery supplies.
About Prairie Salvage In 1958, Anton (Tony) Nemeth opened a small salvage business on Prairie Avenue in a former feed store and coal yard. He carried a variety of items such as dishes, fabrics, linens, etc. Soon the fabrics took off as they became the best seller. He then concentrated on the upholstery fabrics and foams. Eventually he expanded from one small side room to a much larger room, what originally was the coal yard. Now the space entails a velvet room, a vinyl room.
The Next Generation Tony retired in 1999, at age 92, still coming to the store every day. He turned over the store to his long time employee, Lois Veen, who ran the stoe for 8 years, and made many updates to the store to make things more up to date.
To the next Generation Lois Veen now retierd in 2007, Has turned over the store to Beene Veen and his wife Eva Veen now run the store, and are trying many new things to make shoping more fun for everyone.
